2024 West Orange Chess Club Champion Tiebreaker Second Half Results

The second half of the tiebreaker to determine the title of 2024 West Orange Chess Club Champion has been completed. However after the double round robin Game 25 tiebreak tournament we are still left with two, Mark Kernighan and Bilgen Sazci, as they tied for first in the tiebreak.

So on Tuesday June 11th the tiebreaker will be completed with two Game 15s (with 5 second delay before each move) and if still tied after that an Armageddon game where white gets 5 minutes and black gets 4 minutes (no delay for this game) but white must win the game otherwise black becomes champion.

Second Half Tiebreak Results

Roberts 1-0 Kernighan
Sazci 1-0 Lipman
Kernighan 1/2-1/2 Sazci
Lipman 1-0 Roberts
Lipman 0-1 Kernighan
Sazci 0-1 Roberts

Final Tiebreak Standings

Kernighan – 3 1/2 points (3 wins 2 losses 1 draw)
Sazci – 3 1/2 points (2 wins 1 loss 3 draws)
Roberts – 3 points (2 wins 2 losses 2 draws)
Lipman – 2 points (1 win 3 losses 2 draws)

The club would like to congratulate all four participants for their fight as 8 of the 12 games ended decisively, not necessarily all that common for top level competition!

  1. Great job, Bryan, on reporting on this site! Because of you, the other officers, Steve Lorimor (our Chief TD) and others who just simply offer to set up tables, chairs, sets, boards and even kitchen supplies, our club is continuing to progress in the promotion of Chess in New Jersey. I also thank the Recreation Department of West Orange and, in particular, Juan Pintado, who helps set up various programs sponsored by that agency of the town. I also want to thank Cornelia “Candy” Myrick, the FOOTSTEPS coordinator for offering to help promote our efforts.
